Today we had great lectures about the Himalayas and Shimla's history with Dr. Hemant Gupta and Mr. Raaja Bhasin. They explained the challenges the Himalayas are facing due to housing, mining, agriculture, and fuel wood. A major problem in this region is the overpopulation of monkeys. There are monkeys everywhere. Hanuman is the revered Hindu Monkey God, and monkeys are protected under the species protection act. At first, they are adorable, but at closer interaction they are extra nasty in this area. This monkey business is a problem since some monkeys carry Hep. B, eat all the fruit on trees, and are not afraid of people. They move to the urban area and take it over. Today, they were jumping on car hoods, and climbing up people's windows. Even the hotel as a sign to keep the windows closed to safeguard belongings from monkeys.
This summer, I was fortunate to receive a Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad grant to travel and study in India. The purpose of Fulbright grants is for U.S. educators to increase their understanding and knowledge of people and cultures throughout the world. As an ESL teacher in Queens, NY, I am looking forward to learning more about the Indian culture, as well as breathing the air, loving the food, and practicing yoga. Follow my journey throughout India and feel free to post comments. Namaste!
