Gujarati life in Ahmedabad

On Sunday, July 10th, I arrived to Ahmedabad in the Gujarat State. It was a rare free schedule day, so I was lucky to meet up with one of Chetal’s family friends. Deep picked me up in his car, along with his friend Ammol. He took me to a great Gujarati restaurant called Patang, which means Kite. The restaurant is on the top floor and slowly revolves to show an aerial view of Ahmedabad. The vegetarian meal was delicious, and it helped having Deep explain the cuisine.

It was fantastic to chat with the two grad students and get their perspectives on India – the caste system, working in India, arranged vs. love marriages, pop culture, etc. They were super sweet and offered to take me around town. I just wanted music suggestions, but the gentlemen drove me to Crosswords, an Indian Barnes and Nobles. They scanned the aisles for pop music, regional Indian songs, yoga and pranayam CDs and Dvds, and Bollywood tunes. It was one of my favorite afternoons spent in the country.
