Meeting with Local Artists

July 5th the group went to the Centre for Cultural Resources Training (CCRT) site in Dwarka. CCRT creates training programs for teachers in the aim to link education and culture. Their goal is to have online training programs for teachers.

Afterwards, the group of teachers had some fun hands on play, meeting with artisans and learning how to create paper crafts, pottery, jewelry, and drawings. I discovered I have no pottery skills, as the artisan (who was obsessed with perfection) worked to fix my vase.

The highlight of the day was Ms. Shovana Narayana, a beautiful dancer, who performed Kathak Dance. She equated dance as a form of yoga / meditation. It is not purely for entertainment, but rather to enter into a transcendental state of mind. In Kathak dance, dancers were a total of 400 ankle bells, which weigh 4-5 kilos (about 10 lbs). She demonstrated how gestures are used in Kathak dance to tell a stories of animals like the elephant, create a picture of a thunder storm, or to tell a classical story from India.
